The Tang Pre-Doctoral Research Grant in Early China Studies

Pre-Doctoral Research Grant in the amount of $4,000 is offered by the Tang Center to one graduate student each academic year in pursuit of researches in early Chinese civilization. The proposed research must be carried out outside of New York City. Preference is given to research that can contribute to the completion of the applicant’s doctoral dissertation.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be fully registered in a graduate program in Columbia University.
  • Applicants must be in good standing.
  • Applicants must be within seven years of registration.

Application Requirements:

  • Basic application form
  • Budget breakdown
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Official transcripts
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Proposal requirements:
    • 10-page double-spaced project proposal that outlines the importance of the project and the potential contributions of its results to the applicant’s dissertation
    • Project timeline
    • A copy of the applicant’s dissertation prospectus

The application deadline for the 2026-2027 academic year is extended to December 30, 2025.
