Chinese Bronzes in the Minneapolis Institute of Art & Other US Collections:
New Light Shed by Archaeological Finds

Zhi Jun Zi jian water basin (detail); Eastern Zhou dynasty, early 5th century BCE; Bronze; Height: 8 7/8 in. (22.54
cm); Minneapolis Institute of Art 50.46.103

Drawing on the large-scale archeological finds of recent decades, and relying upon visual,
typological, inscriptional, and technological analysis, the papers in this symposium look to
provide updated information for Chinese archaic bronzes in the Minneapolis Institute of Art
(Mia) and other US collections. By discussing the ritual, political, and social aspects of these
bronze objects, the fresh studies will provide a unique window into ancient Chinese history and
culture of the Bronze Age.
